Odds and Ends
This page is devoted to various off-beat and more obscure projects
that Len Deighton has been (at least partially) responsible for
over the years.
- PESTS, A Play in Three Acts (Martin, 1994).
One of a limited edition of just 226 copies, each numbered and some
signed by the publisher. This play was written just after Deighton completed
'The IPCRESS File', and contains a preface by Deighton, as well as facsimile
pages of the author's original manuscript. (This is the first edition and is
Mint in a Mint glassine d/w as issued).
- THE ASASSINATION OF PRESIDENT KENNEDY (Jonathan Cape,
London, 1967). Compiled and edited by Michael Rand,
Howard Loxton and Len Deighton. A do-it-yourself
JFK-assassination conspiracy-theory test kit. (I saw
this kit set up in a bookshop in the 60's. I couldn't
really afford it at the time, so it's one of the gaps in my
LD collection).
- THE EGYPT FLIGHT. L.Z. 127-GRAF ZEPPELIN. (German Philatelic Society, Maryland, 1980).
By Fred F. Blau and Cyril Deighton.
Printed in an edition of 500 copies distributed almost solely to
stamp collectors. Co-written by
Deighton under his real name of Cyril Deighton, this book is a study of the
history of the Graf Zeppelin's flight to Egypt and the postage stamps and
cancellations issued on the flight. Extensively illustrated.
- THE ORIENT FLIGHT. L.Z. 127-GRAF ZEPPELIN. (German Philatelic Society, Maryland, 1980).
By Fred F. Blau and Cyril Deighton.
Printed in an edition of 1000 copies distributed almost solely to
stamp collectors. Co-written by
Deighton under his real name of Cyril Deighton, this book is a study of the
history of the on-board postal service on the Graf Zeppelin. The airship's
Orient flight marked the re-introduction of the airborne post office. A
fascinating study of the Zeppelin, postage stamps, and cancellations.
- LEN DEIGHTON'S LONDON DOSSIER. Compiled and annotated
by Len Deighton. [Jonathan Cape in association with
Penguin Books, (1967)]
I wish I could find my copy of this book (it must be in a box
somewhere). Very 60's in parts. I remember a phrase directing readers
to Carnaby Street for "trousers you can't sit down in".
- LEN DEIGHTON'S CONTINENTAL DOSSIER.: A Collection of Cultural,
Culinary, Historical, Spooky, Grim and Preposterous Fact.
Compiled by Victor and Margaret Pettit. Introduced by
by Len Deighton. [Michael Joseph in association with
Wylton Dickson Publishing, London, (1968)].
- PLAYBOY'S GUIDE TO A CONTINENTAL HOLIDAY. Essay in Playboy
magazine. May 1968. Len Deighton's first article as Travel Editor
for Playboy. How long did this relationship continue?
- NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN.
Len Deighton is listed as one of the script writers of this 1983 James Bond
flick, that saw the return of Sean Connery in the lead role.
